A valuable recording that includes the live premiere dedicated to Itobu himself by his nine beloved disciples. This rare album is being reissued! This album, which captures the celebratory concert—the first part of the “Celebration of Professor Itobu’s Honorary Title” held in February 1988—is being reissued for the first time since its original release. Because its initial release had an extremely limited print run, it became famous as a rare recording. The program features nine of his former students (including Akutagawa and Mayuzumi), each of whom composed a short piece (around 2 minutes long) based on themes from their teacher’s works, which they premiered at this event before presenting them to him. It’s a celebration of the “honor” that is truly befitting of a composer’s students. These relaxed performances all feature the unmistakable Ifukube style—recognizable from the very first listen (the conclusion of Maeda’s final piece is particularly compelling!). One can almost picture the heartwarming scene. Maki Ishii, the mastermind behind the event, conducted, and the album also includes the three other pieces performed that day. The content is sure to appeal not only to Ifukube fans but also to fans of Japanese composers in general. In addition to being around two minutes long, the pieces by the nine composers were apparently required to feature the same instrumental arrangement as Ifukube’s early work “Three Folk-Style Pictures,” which was also performed that day.
