Description:
Rare stereo recordings by Stefan Askenase, a pianist in the direct Chopin line - Liszt and Chopin miniatures played in a high Romantic style that has since vanished. Stefan Askenase (1896-1985) was a Polish pianist of Jewish descent. His first teacher was his mother, a pianist who had studied with Chopin's pupil Karol Mikuli; he himself went on to study with the great pianist Emil von Sauer, a pupil of Liszt. Two traditions therefore run through his playing: the Polish line descending directly from Chopin, and the German line running from Beethoven through Czerny to Liszt. He made his debut in Vienna in 1919 and was active early on as a teacher, holding a long tenure at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels. His pupils included his younger Polish compatriot André Tchaikowsky, the Argentinian Martha Argerich and Japan's Mitsuko Uchida. Renowned as a Chopin player, he was also at home in the German repertoire from Bach to Brahms. His style was a Romantic one, varying colour, dynamics and tempo freely according to the character of the music. The 1967 Japanese guide Meikyoku Record Jiten (Ongaku no Tomo Sha) described him thus: "His manner is Romantic, with slow tempi and generous rubato, producing a sentimental Chopin. Few pianists play Chopin in this style today, and in that sense he is a rarity, though the approach can seem somewhat old-fashioned" (review by Ichiro Ueno) - an indication of how out of step he was thought to be. Most of his Deutsche Grammophon recordings remained out of the catalogue until very recently, and as a performer he had been largely forgotten. In an age that can accommodate many different sets of values, however, we now reissue his stereo recordings of the Chopin piano concertos together with a stereo recital of shorter pieces by Schubert, Liszt, Mendelssohn and Chopin. The original LP cover artwork has been used, and the CD masters were prepared from high-bit, high-sampling (192kHz/24-bit) transfers of the original master tapes.
