A Dream Team-Up: Mozart Recordings by Carzon, Ser, and the Vienna Philharmonic Return to the Japanese Market After a Long Absence! Although this Mozart recording featuring this dream team was recorded in 1964, it remained shelved for many years because Carzon did not grant permission for its release; it was first released overseas in 2003. It was first released in Japan in 2005 (UCCD-3429), and following its 2008 release on SHM-CD (UCCD-9667), this marks its return. Carson’s performances of Mozart’s piano concertos were highly acclaimed even during his lifetime for his beautiful touch, flexible phrasing, and poetic musicality, and he himself enjoyed including them in his concert programs. For this very reason, it can be surmised that he felt a near-obsessive compulsion to ensure his recordings captured his very best performances. In fact, aside from these two works with Szell, his recording of the 27th Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kertész in 1967 also remained in the archives until 1999. Furthermore, the highly acclaimed recording of Symphonies Nos. 20 and 27, made in 1970 with the British Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Benjamin Britten, was only finally approved for release shortly before his death; by the time it was first released in November 1982, he had already passed away, and it was issued as a memorial album. Ultimately, Carson left behind four different session recordings of Symphony No. 23 and three of Symphony No. 27; all are masterful performances of the highest caliber, proving that he approached recording with lofty ideals beyond the comprehension of ordinary people. In that sense, this long-unreleased masterpiece is essential for understanding the complex genius that was Carson, and it is also a valuable recording for fans of Szell and the Vienna Philharmonic. The booklet features a new foreword and commentary by Nobuhiku Mitsuoka. His lucid analysis, which unravels the relationship between Carson and Szell, makes for a compelling read.
