Another complete collection of Beethoven sonatas by Schneiderhan. A masterful performance imbued with a sense of modesty, featuring the great Kemp! Vienna-born Wolfgang Schneiderhan (1915–2002) made his mark early in life as a child prodigy. From 1937 onward, he served as concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic and was one of the figures who sustained Vienna’s musical scene during the difficult years of the war and its aftermath. In 1949, he resigned as concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic to pursue a career as a soloist. During the 1950s, he performed primarily in Europe, and from the 1960s onward, he expanded his activities worldwide. Listening to the recordings he left behind, it becomes clear that these changes in his environment also influenced his performance style. (1) From his days as a child prodigy through the early 1950s, his tone was sweet and mellow; he sang the melodies, delivering performances that were both dignified and romantic. (2) From the late 1950s through the early 1960s, his performances reflected a clean tone with restrained vibrato and a well-defined structure, creating deeply evocative performances through the interplay with romantic emotion. Then, (3) by the late 1960s, while retaining his fresh musicality, he reached a new level of artistic freedom, both formally and spiritually. This complete set of Beethoven’s violin sonatas consists of recordings from period (1), and in collaboration with the master Kemp, known for his romantic style, he delivers truly emotionally rich performances. Her partnership with Kemp is outstanding; in the final movement of No. 6, for example, they take long pauses together, creating a dialogue that feels as if they are looking into each other’s eyes—a moment of pure delight. If you listen to this alongside the stereo complete set with Zeman, which exudes a classical sense of clarity, you will surely be able to sense the evolution of Schneiderhan’s artistic style.
