A beautiful performance by this renowned ensemble, led by veteran musician Drolts, with a charm reminiscent of trees swaying in the breeze The Droltz Quartet is a legendary ensemble from a bygone era, founded in 1950 by Eduardo Droltz (1919–1973), who served as first violinist of the Berlin Philharmonic. Droltz, who studied under the renowned chamber music professor Gabriel Bouillon at the Paris Conservatory, delivered string quartet performances rich in emotion and elegance that immediately gained popularity in Germany. From the 1950s through the early 1960s, they recorded for Deutsche Electrola, for German Electra in the mid-1960s, and for Deutsche Grammophon from the late 1960s onward. However, as that era was dominated by a stylish performance style, the Droltz Quartet’s romantic approach was deemed outdated, and by the CD era, they had been all but forgotten. A few years ago, their recordings for Eurodisc were released on CD, attracting the attention of a small group of enthusiasts. Now, to allow a wider audience to experience the artistry of the Drolts Quartet, we are releasing their definitive recording—the complete Schumann string quartets—on CD for the first time worldwide. The Drolts perform with natural gestures, like trees swaying in the wind, paying close attention to the various scenes within each piece. This approach conveys a delicate nuance that cannot be achieved through a straightforward performance. For example, if you listen to the variation movement (second movement) of String Quartet No. 3, you will understand just how the Drolts endow each variation with a rich variety of expressions. Their sound itself has the texture of wood grain, seeming to connect us today directly to Schumann’s world. In the Piano Quintet in E-flat major, they perform alongside Christoph Eschenbach (1940–), a renowned contemporary conductor and, at the time, a rising star pianist aged 26. As an artist with a penchant for the aesthetic, Eschenbach, together with Drolz, fully captures the world of Romanticism at a leisurely tempo—particularly in the second movement— Conversely, in the third movement, the scherzo, they perform with a brisk rhythm that seems to breathe youthful vitality into Drolz, etching into the recording a joyful encounter between a veteran and a rising star.
