Haitink's Mahler with the Berliner Philharmoniker on the grandest scale - PHILIPS's unfinished project gathered together for the first time. Haitink had already completed a Mahler symphony cycle with his own Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra between 1962 and 1971. The new series begun in 1987 attracted worldwide attention as the Berliner Philharmoniker's first complete Mahler cycle. The Mahler boom was then at its height and several cycles were being recorded simultaneously, but this one drew particular interest as Mahler from one of the world's great virtuoso orchestras. Haitink too was at the peak of his powers: his Beethoven cycle with the Royal Concertgebouw had been extraordinarily well received, a Bruckner cycle with the Vienna Philharmonic was under way, and in 1988 he began studio recording Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen. When the First Symphony appeared as the first instalment of the series, the subscription concerts given immediately before the sessions had already been rapturously reviewed in the local press, and expectations rose sharply. On release the performances proved even finer than hoped and were met with unstinting praise - an assessment that held right through to the seventh instalment, the Symphony No. 7 "Song of the Night" recorded in 1992 and coupled with the Adagio from the Tenth. With that release, however, the project came to an end. This set gathers every one of the Mahler studio recordings that Haitink made with the Berliner Philharmoniker between 1987 and 1992 and that were issued separately at the time - the first collected edition in the two decades and more since the project ended. Begun while Karajan still presided over the orchestra, these recordings capture the gorgeous sound of a Berliner Philharmoniker whose principal players were still in their seats: the orchestra at its finest.
