Following the complete “The Nutcracker” from Vol. 1 (PROC1411), this is a re-release of the complete “Sleeping Beauty” with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. While the former was recorded in 1975, this album was recorded over a longer period from 1979 to 1981, making it a truly magnificent recording that marked the end of the analog era. Dratti had already recorded the complete work with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra for the MERCURY label in 1955, during the monaural era; this recording is a re-recording of that version. While the earlier recording was highly regarded as one of the definitive performances of this work during the monaural era, this re-recording surpasses even that with its greater sense of scale and richness, drawing the listener into this lengthy piece from start to finish. It stands out as a truly exceptional recording among the many interpretations of this work. The series of recordings with the Concertgebouw Orchestra are all masterpieces destined to be remembered for generations to come, and this recording is no exception. In short, this is a grand-scale “Sleeping Beauty” that overwhelms the listener with Dratti’s artistry and the superb quality of the recording. It captures the true joy of listening to the complete work, rather than just a suite. Furthermore, Track 18 of Act II, the “Interlude” (5:15)—which was omitted from the previous two-disc DUO Series (both domestic and imported editions)—has been restored to its original form, making this a “complete recording.” Spanning two discs, this extended-length release totals over 160 minutes.
