Leister’s first landmark Mozart recording. Kubelik and the BPO’s support shines through! Leister was 30 years old at the time of the recording. This recording captures a pivotal period in his career, during which he had been a key member of the Berlin Philharmonic—a position he had held since joining the orchestra at age 22. Although he later re-recorded these works with Karajan for the EMI label, delivering performances that epitomized the pinnacle of classical music, this DG recording, accompanied by Kubelik, has not lost any of its value; in fact, it is a crucial Mozart recording that represents Leister’s musical roots. It remains a classic album, still cherished by many for its numerous charms. What is truly remarkable is that, even when compared to the several subsequent re-recordings, this performance is already fully realized from both musical and technical perspectives. While there are differences in sound quality between the Karajan, Kubelik, and label versions, there is no doubt that both are performances brimming with charm. The Weber piece included as a coupling is a performance that showcases Leister’s distinctive style, faithfully expressing a deeply textured German sound. For this reissue, we are releasing the album with the original coupling from its initial LP release. We have faithfully reproduced the elegant cover art and meticulously transferred the recording from the master tape to CD (creating the CD master using high-bit, high-sampling technology).
