A masterful performance in which the talents of both artists came together perfectly. A timeless standard for Schumann recordings. Alongside the complete Beethoven symphonies, this is one of the most significant recordings by Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. As a “mature” interpretation of Schumann by two artists who had already completed various complete symphony cycles, it remains a celebrated performance cherished by many fans to this day. From the late 1970s through the 1980s, Haitink’s style increasingly centered on grander expressions and broader dynamic ranges—as exemplified by his re-recordings of Bruckner’s Symphonies Nos. 7–9 (PROC1230)—and this period produced numerous performances that can truly be described as the pinnacle of their collaboration. Even in the Schumann recordings made during this period, his expressive power remained undiminished; given that he never re-recorded these works later with the BPO or VPO, this performance can be seen as the culmination of Haitink’s Schumann interpretations. Considering the quality of the recording as well, this collaboration with the Concertgebouw Orchestra can be called a timeless classic. Although it has been out of print for a long time, this masterpiece is finally being reissued.
