A performance by the ultimate duo carrying on Bernstein’s legacy. Overwhelmingly powerful! “Aria and Barcarolle,” completed in 1988, was a work whose concept had been in the works since around 1955, with melodies added over time until its completion. Originally composed for piano four-hands, mezzo-soprano, and baritone (the premiere on May 9, 1988, was performed as a four-voice version, with the piano parts played by Bernstein himself and T. Thomas; the two-voice premiere took place the following year), two separate versions also exist: one with the piano part arranged for string ensemble and percussion (premiered on September 22, 1989, by the New York Chamber Orchestra, conducted by G. Schwartz) and a version for chamber orchestra. The premiere of this orchestral version took place after Bernstein’s death, on September 26, 1993, at the Barbican Centre in London, performed by the musicians featured on this recording (orchestration by Bruce Coughlin). For conductor T. Thomas, who originally performed the piano part with Bernstein at the 1988 premiere, this recording—even though it is the orchestral version—undoubtedly best reproduces and respects Bernstein’s intentions (this recording is the world premiere recording of the orchestral version). The paired “Quiet Place” Suite, like “Aria and Barcarolle,” is a masterpiece centered on the theme of the modern American family, featuring powerful yet lyrical melodies. As for the *Symphonic Dances* from *West Side Story*, the LSO seizes the moment to deliver a performance at full throttle. In particular, the trumpet playing by Maurice Murphy—who served as principal trumpet for many years (and passed away in 2010, much to everyone’s regret)—can only be described as incredible. Although he had previously showcased his prowess on soundtracks for Hollywood films (including numerous titles such as *Star Wars* and *Indiana Jones*), his performance here holds its own even when compared to Bernstein’s own recording with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It is a flawless performance that can be considered the definitive modern orchestral interpretation of this piece. This alone greatly enhances the value of this recording!
