A powerful performance of the Brandenburg Concertos that left a lasting impression on the young genius Maazel. Featuring André and others! This recording was made shortly after Maazel succeeded Fritschay as music director of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. Just one month later, he had already recorded the complete “Orchestral Suites,” which have since been released as part of this Vintage series (Released in 2010; PROC1061). Upon its initial release, it received rave reviews—particularly from renowned music critics—making it an essential recording when discussing the young Maazel. As with the “Orchestral Suites,” it is also noteworthy that numerous top-tier soloists, including Maurice André (No. 2), participated in this recording (among others, Passin on oboe and Koji Toyoda—then the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra’s first concertmaster—consistently performed the violin solos. Debost also appears as the partner in No. 4). Although there is a tendency today to shy away from romantic interpretations of Bach or performances by modern orchestras, the tight, robust sound and Mazer’s unique, insightful interpretation remain essential listening even today. Although this recording was previously released on CD, this is the first reissue featuring the original jacket artwork. The back cover of the original LP, which listed the names of each soloist, has also been reproduced on the back of the booklet. The sound quality, derived from a CD master created via high-bit, high-sampling conversion (24-bit, 192 kHz) from the original master, remains fully satisfying even by today’s standards, allowing listeners to experience this legendary recording by Philips from that era.
