A collection of late symphonies featuring Abado and the legendary “Vienna Philharmonic” in their 1970s masterpiece—*Symphony No. 1 “Pathétique”* and *Symphony No. 4*, combined with *Symphony No. 5* performed with the London Symphony Orchestra. During the 1960s and 1970s, Abbado performed and recorded extensively with the Vienna Philharmonic. He accompanied them on his debut recordings of Beethoven, Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, and Bruckner, as well as on their 1973 tour of Japan, and was regarded with great anticipation as a leading figure of the next generation of musicians. Of course, it is well known that he continued to maintain a strong relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic thereafter. This performance of Tchaikovsky’s *Pathetique* and Symphony No. 4 showcases the orchestra’s distinctive character while delivering beautiful, lyrical music. In fact, there is scarcely another recording where the distinctive qualities of the wind section are so vividly apparent. It also includes his Symphony No. 5 with the London Philharmonic and *Romeo and Juliet* with the Boston Symphony, making it an excellent album for getting to know Abbado in the 1970s.
