Reissued for the first time since 1990. Solti's first Bach recording, and widely regarded as the finest modern-instrument account of the work. This recording caused a stir as Solti's first venture into Bach, and it is still praised today as a supreme modern-instrument reading. Solti takes an objective view of the score and concentrates on drawing out the Chicago Symphony's celebrated precision, achieving a sublime beauty entirely free of emotional indulgence. The sheer scale of the Chicago Symphony Chorus under the doyen of choral conductors, Margaret Hillis, is equally remarkable. The then rising stars Hans Peter Blochwitz and Olaf Bar are joined by seasoned artists such as Kiri Te Kanawa and Anne Sofie von Otter, all of them singing with restraint and intelligence. *Includes sung texts with Japanese translation. Georg Solti (b. 1912) recorded this St Matthew Passion in the spring of his seventy-fourth year, eighteen years after becoming music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1969 and forging his formidable partnership with that virtuoso ensemble. [...] And so a St Matthew Passion in Solti's "late style" came into being. Anyone approaching it expecting the familiar Solti will more likely be taken aback by its measured, unemphatic manner in place of fierce dynamic contrasts. The characteristic discipline and the focused, unwasteful sound world are certainly still present. But there is not a trace of display; a restrained stillness runs through the whole performance. [...] This St Matthew Passion shows how deeply rooted in tradition Solti, so long at the forefront of performance, actually was.
