The master’s final performance is both elegant and dazzling. A new pairing of two of his signature Tchaikovsky pieces. This recording features the master Pierre Monteux (1875–1964) from the year of his passing. Although Monteux was a native Frenchman, he was highly skilled in Russian repertoire as well as German music by composers such as Beethoven and Brahms. The two Tchaikovsky pieces featured on this album as a new pairing are part of his signature repertoire; a 1963 Vanguard recording of these works with the London Philharmonic Orchestra also survives. You can savor his masterful artistry, which exudes a fresh emotional vitality—completely defying his advanced age—within a dignified and well-structured performance. Montu has a famous 1958 recording (RCA) with the BSO, and if we include live performances, there are multiple recordings of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5—suggesting he must have been particularly fond of this piece. Among these, this recording with the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra has long been held in high regard as one of his very last recordings, made in the year of his death. Compared to the BSO or the LSO, the orchestra’s sound is somewhat darker, which may make this performance seem understated at first listen; however, in terms of substance, it is a recording that effectively conveys Montu’s distinctive style. What is truly remarkable is that his interpretation and expression show little change even when compared to his earlier recordings. Furthermore, the precision is evident in the fact that each movement is performed within a one-minute margin. While his conducting remains unwavering, the unique timbre he achieves with each orchestra varies. This recording is exceptional in terms of its smoothness and the depth of its tone. The newly paired “Romeo and Juliet” was recorded around the same time, but its nuances differ somewhat from those of Symphony No. 5. This performance, with its greater sense of momentum, is also a masterpiece that showcases Montu’s artistry at its highest level. Note that these recordings were preserved as digital files rather than analog masters, so we performed a new remastering directly from the digital data. The results are remarkable, allowing listeners to experience Montu’s masterful artistry from his final years up close.
