The brilliance of condensed energy and the forceful sound of steel---Toscanini's astonishing masterpiece performance of "Eroica," which he reached at the end of his life.　The fifth release of the "XRCD24 RCA Toscanini Original Edition," which uses the original monaural master tapes (76cm/sec.) from the RCA collection and reissues them in their best condition, is the 1953 release of Symphony No. 3 "Eroica," which Toscanini continued to perform throughout his life, and which is the most widely performed of Beethoven's symphonies. Symphony No. 3 "Hero" (1953), which Toscanini continued to perform throughout his life and performed most frequently among Beethoven's symphonies. This is a live recording of the third concert of the 1953/54 season, Toscanini's last season in active service. Although there were no pure recording sessions by RCA during this season, the concerts with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, which were broadcast live on the radio every week, were recorded by the RCA staff in parallel with the broadcasts. After his retirement, Toscanini and his son Walter listened to and selected performances from the remaining broadcast recordings that could be made into recordings. This "Hero" is thought to have been selected as part of that process.　Toscanini's commitment to the work can be seen in the fact that three different recordings of Toscanini's "Hero" have been released by RCA as authorized recordings (the most recordings of the same work with the NBC Symphony Orchestra). The first tape recording, a session recording from 1949, was one of the earliest LPs and was included in the boxed set of Beethoven's complete symphonies. The 1953 live recording was released in 1960, three years after Toscanini's death, and has been regarded as the definitive recording of Toscanini's "Hero" in terms of both performance and sound quality.　This performance was Toscanini's last conducting of "Hero" in his life. During the genepro of this concert, Toscanini played the second movement of the "Funeral March" once through and then asked the audience to play it again, saying "once more, for me.The performance in this program, which is filled with a sense of regret for the beloved symphony he had performed throughout his life, is characterized by the fact that it retains Toscanini's distinctive stamp on this work (for example, when the first theme finally comes out to the trumpet in the first movement coda, the melody line is reinforced and played legato, giving a powerful impression of the first theme's return, first presented by the cello), and it depicts the work on a deeper and more majestic scale than earlier performances.
