Miho Fukui presents Vivaldi with the early music performers she studied with at SCB! Volume 4 of her album series of concertos for baroque bassoon! After graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts, Miho Fukui honed her skills in Baroque bassoon at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (SCB), a renowned center for early music education in Switzerland. She is a bassoonist active in Switzerland, Germany, and Japan. In 2009, she formed the early music ensemble “Ensemble F,” centered around Japanese musicians who are alumni of SCB, and continues to explore the bassoon concertos of Antonio Vivaldi. Following releases in 2014, 2018, and 2024, this album is the fourth in the series. In addition to a selection of approximately 40 pieces from Vivaldi’s bassoon concertos, it includes oboe concertos and sinfonias from serenatas, shedding light on the flexible relationships between the major reed instruments of the time. Based on manuscript scores preserved in Turin and informed by historical research, this recording vividly captures the rich tonal diversity and advanced technical virtuosity of the bassoon in Vivaldi’s late works. Miho Fukui masterfully distinguishes between the Baroque bassoon and the Baroque oboe, embodying the performance practices of Vivaldi’s era. She further highlights the diverse timbres and exceptional technical skill inherent in these works. We present Ensemble F’s meticulous and dynamic performance in high-quality sound via a hybrid SACD.
