Description:
Shigehiko Kawaguchi Plays Beethoven on the Finchcocks Collection! A "Journey with Beethoven" featuring three legendary instruments. A landmark recording made on the current Finchcocks! Shigehiko Kawaguchi, who continues his journey with a deep love for the fortepiano and an insatiable spirit of exploration, presents "Journey with Beethoven," a monumental recording that will undoubtedly celebrate the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death in 2027! In his search for instruments for this recording, he arrived at three original fortepianos housed in the Finch Cox Collection in the UK. Born from a dialogue with these three fortepianos—conducted with both care and, at times, boldness—"Journey with Beethoven" is woven together through an approach that reveals the master composer’s diverse expressions from a perspective distinct from that of his famous "32 Piano Sonatas." It is well known that the piano evolved and developed at an astonishing pace during the era in which Beethoven lived—the transition from the Classical to the Romantic period. The instruments used in “Journey with Beethoven” include a Rosenberger from around 1795, made when the composer was in his mid-twenties; a Clementi (square piano) from around 1825, made during his final years; and a Graf from around 1826—three fortepianos by different makers, each with its own distinct character. These three historic instruments, which lived through the same era as the composer and have endured for nearly 200 years, convey to us today the timbre, acoustics, and evolving expressive styles of the instruments from Beethoven’s time through a program featuring bagatelles, rondos, dance pieces, transcriptions, and the Fantasy in G minor, interspersed with the rare 1822 edition of “Für Elise.” The “Finchcocks Collection,” housed in an early Georgian-style manor house built in 1725 in Kent, England, was beloved by many visitors and enthusiasts for 45 years as one of the world’s leading museums of historical keyboard instruments. At the time, the collection housed over 100 precious instruments, but the museum closed following the retirement of its owners, Richard and Katrina Barnett (Richard passed away in 2022) in 2015 (the manor house still stands). While many of the instruments were passed on to new owners through a charity auction, about a dozen instruments were moved to the Barnetts’ home in Tunbridge Wells, where they continue to be cherished to this day.
