This project commemorates the 100th anniversary of the relocation of the "Bauhaus" to Dessau, which had a great influence on art, crafts and architecture in 20th century Germany.
What is the connection between Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" and the Bauhaus?
The "Bauhaus" was established in Weimar in 1919 and moved to Dessau in 1925 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its relocation. To commemorate the centennial of the orchestra's move to Dessau in 1925, the Dessau Anhalt Philharmonic Orchestra, a prestigious and historic orchestra that has been active at the Anhalt Theater in Dessau and celebrated its 250th anniversary in the 2016/17 season, has produced an album.
Featured in this project are German composer Thomas Buchholz's (b.1961) "Feininger Fractal" and "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Mussorgsky (arranged by Ravel). The "Feininger Fractal" is based on a fugue composed by Lionel Feininger, a painter who taught at the Bauhaus and is admired along with Kandinsky (see below), and reconstructed into an orchestral work consisting of 12 pieces.Buchholz's hand breathes new life into this fugue, which has a unique structure that reflects his sense of form as a painter. Pictures at an Exhibition" was staged at the Friedrich Theater in Dessau in 1928 under the direction of Wassily Kandinsky, another Bauhaus teacher who is considered a pioneer of abstract painting. This is an excellent opportunity to show how Bauhaus and music interacted in Dessau, a city where music, art, and history intersect in multiple ways.
