Thomas Adès (b. 1971), a popular British composer, conductor, and pianist, has been hailed as the reincarnation of Benjamin Britten. In Japan, he was selected as a juror for the 2020 Toru Takemitsu Composition Award, and with many of his works being performed and recorded by renowned artists, he has been particularly active as a composer in recent years. The “Beethoven & Barry” project has featured all nine of Beethoven’s symphonies combined with works by Irish composer Gerald Barry (b. 1952)—who has stated he was greatly influenced by Beethoven—in a series of recordings. A 6-CD box set is now available, containing all three volumes (previously released in pairs) along with a Japanese liner note written exclusively for this release by Noriyuki Komuro! Gerald Barry’s “Beethoven” is a mini-opera that sets to music the text of Beethoven’s enigmatic “Immortal Beloved” letters. “The Eternal Recurrence” is a work for soprano and orchestra composed using excerpts from Nietzsche’s *Thus Spoke Zarathustra* as its text, intended to pair with Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
