The second release in the Vaughan Williams Society’s series commemorating the 150th anniversary of Vaughan Williams’ birth! This is the second album in the Vaughan Williams Society’s 150th anniversary celebration, presented by “Albion Records,” the Society’s own label, which has long dedicated itself to showcasing Ralph Vaughan Williams’s lesser-known, forgotten, and unpublished works. This album features everything from original works for brass band to a concerto considered an essential part of the tuba repertoire, to a brass band arrangement of the *English Folk Song Suite*—considered a classic of wind band repertoire (world premiere recording)—this album traces the great legacy Vaughan Williams has left to the British wind music world. The featured soloist, Ross Knight, currently serves as principal tuba with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. He honed his skills at the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic and has performed with some of the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. He is a highly accomplished musician who won second place in the tuba category and the overall championship at the 2019 “Eolus International Wind Instrument Competition.” He is also scheduled to take up a professorship at the Geneva Conservatory of Music in September 2022. The United Kingdom is also known as a powerhouse in the world of brass bands. Its history dates back to the 19th century, during the Industrial Revolution. The Tredegar Town Band traces its origins to 1849, and since its official formation in 1876, it has won numerous brass band competitions. Under the leadership of Music Director Ian Porthouse—who himself served as the band’s principal cornetist in 1995—and with guest conductor Martin Brabbins (who recorded the complete symphonies of Vaughan Williams for Hyperion and currently serves as Music Director of the English National Opera; his musical roots lie in the euphonium and trombone), they bring out the charm of a traditional sound cultivated over more than 150 years.
