A tribute to Yun Isang, whose life was marked by tragedy! An album paying tribute to the tragic life of Yun Isang, featuring Luigi Piovano, principal cellist of the Santa Cecilia Academy Orchestra, and pianist Aldo Orvieto, who studied under Chiccolini! The concerto features a collaboration with Tatsuya Shimono and the Japan Philharmonic! Against the backdrop of the Cold War between North and South Korea and the tensions between Eastern and Western cultures, Yun Isang (1917–1995) led an adventurous and tragic life worthy of a novel or film. In 1967, Yun was abducted by South Korean intelligence agents in West Berlin and taken to Seoul, where he was sentenced to life imprisonment for being a North Korean spy. Although his sentence was reduced on appeal, he was ultimately released in 1969 thanks to a petition signed by prominent cultural figures from around the world and the support of the German Foreign Ministry. He subsequently acquired German citizenship and spent the rest of his life in Germany. The nightmares, fear, and torture he endured during his years in prison naturally influenced Yun’s work, and traces of this experience can be seen in one of his most beautiful and moving pieces, the *Cello Concerto*. On the other hand, in *Nore* (meaning “song”), composed in 1964, one can find, amidst its beauty, an intense lyricism reminiscent of Debussy’s Cello Sonata. In an interview, he spoke about the finale of the Cello Concerto as follows: “Consider the octave leap toward the end. This leap signifies freedom, purity, and the need and desire for the absolute. In the orchestra, the oboe glissandos from G-sharp to A, and the trumpet takes over that A; for me, this range has always held a divine allure. (...) The cello tries to reach A but cannot. It manages to reach a quarter-tone above G-sharp via a glissando, but it cannot go any higher. It gives up. The trumpet’s A—symbolizing the infinite, unimaginable zenith, the absolute—continues until the very end.” Tokyo M-Plus
