Israeli mandolinist Jacob Reuven makes his Hyperion debut with an album combining Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” and Piazzolla’s “The Four Seasons,” which skillfully weaves Vivaldi’s motifs into the language of tango! A graduate of the Be’er Sheva Conservatory and the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, Reuven possesses a broad musical perspective ranging from Baroque to contemporary music, captivating audiences with his overwhelming virtuosity and uncompromising performances. He has already performed at numerous international music festivals and collaborated with renowned conductors and orchestras such as Zubin Mehta and Mstislav Rostropovich; he has also established himself as a top-tier musician as a member of the Israel Mandolin Soloists and the Kerman Quartet. He is highly regarded as one of today’s most popular virtuosos. Proving excellent support for Ruvén’s performance on this “Four Seasons” album is Omar Meir Wellber, a rising star also from Israel who succeeded Fanho Mena as principal conductor of the BBC Philharmonic beginning in the 2019–2020 season. In addition to conducting the Sinfonietta Leipzig, he also performs on the accordion and harpsichord, complementing the mandolin in the lead role. The instrument used by Ruven was custom-made by the world-renowned Israeli mandolin maker, Arik Kerman. Mr. Kerman’s mandolins are said to be so groundbreaking and meticulously crafted that imitations are circulating worldwide; Rüven also praises them, stating, “Over the years, I have met many mandolinists and luthiers and have performed on countless mandolins from around the world. However, I have never encountered an instrument that matches the possibilities and tonal nuances produced by Arik Kerman’s mandolins,” he says, praising them highly.
