Instrumental works modeled after polyphonic music and chansons, recorded as a duet for biwela and lute! Toyohiko Sato, a leading figure in the lute world and a world-renowned master whom Japan is proud to call its own, releases a new recording on his independent label, “Nostalgia.” In the 16th century, instrumental music that imitated polyphonic and choral music was known as “fantasia.” Among them, Francesco da Milano of Italy and Valenti Bakfalk of Hungary left behind exceptionally fine works; their solo lute pieces have been recorded as a duet featuring a 6-course lute and a vihuela—a combination of distinct timbres. Furthermore, the album demonstrates—through the form of a lute and vihuela duet—the hypothesis that improvisational ornamentation was likely also practiced in choral performances of secular music. With duets studded with brilliant ornamentation, the album recreates through instrumental music how chansons were sung in those days. The performance features four musicians—Toru Sakurada, who studied under Toyohiko Sato, and Misako Takano and Yukio Akiyama, who both studied under Sato—divided into two duos.
