The First Piano Sonata and the Moments musicaux, coupled with a group of captivating miniatures. Born in Scotland, Steven Osborne won the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in 1991 and the Naumburg International Piano Competition in New York in 1997, and he is today one of the leading pianists on the roster of Hyperion. His previous solo album, the Prokofiev War Sonatas (PCDA68298/CDA68298), was named a Record Geijutsu Tokusen disc, was nominated for a Gramophone Award and won the instrumental category at the BBC Music Magazine Awards. Some two years on, he turns to Rachmaninov. At the heart of the programme are the Piano Sonata No. 1, inspired by Goethe's Faust, and the six Moments musicaux, in which Rachmaninov's brilliant technique and expressive range are distilled to their essence. Around them Osborne places the composer's own transcription of a movement from the All-Night Vigil, together with two of the three works Rachmaninov wrote in 1917 before leaving Russia: the Oriental Sketch and Oskolki (easily misunderstood through the English rendering "Fragments" - the Russian word does not denote a fragmentary piece, but rather the shards of, say, a broken mirror). The result is an intriguing piece of programming. Osborne has a distinguished track record in this repertoire. His 2018 recording of the Etudes-tableaux (CDA68188) was praised by Gramophone - "Rachmaninov fans won't want to miss this" - and named an Editor's Choice, as well as being nominated in Limelight Magazine's Recordings of the Year 2018. His 2014 release of Medtner and Rachmaninov piano sonatas (PCDA67936/CDA67936) was a Gramophone Editor's Choice and a BBC Music Magazine Instrumental Choice, and his 2009 recording of the 24 Preludes (CDA67700) was nominated for a Gramophone Award.
