Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Russian virtuoso Andrei Gavrilov visited Japan in November 2020, stunning audiences across the country and receiving thunderous applause! This new recording, released as the second installment of a joint project between “UnzippedClassicalMusic”—which Gavrilov runs on his official website—and “DaVinciClassic,” is a collection of works by four composers centered on Liszt’s piano sonatas! In 1974, at the tender age of 18, he won the Tchaikovsky International Competition and achieved great success at the Salzburg Festival, only to face persecution by the KGB afterward. Then, in a dramatic turn of events, he became the first artist in the former Soviet Union to be granted permission to reside abroad without having to seek asylum, thanks to the approval of then-Communist Party General Secretary Gorbachev. Gavrilov has led a turbulent life. Dramatic dynamics achieved through powerful strikes and a delicate touch. At times, his power is so intense that one worries the piano might break. His performances, which blend extreme boldness with delicacy, consistently spark mixed reactions. Yet, after the immense global success he enjoyed through the early 1990s, he overcame the agonizing days that followed—including a hiatus from performing—to make a magnificent comeback. Here, we present the “present” that Gavrilov has reached. Titled “Music That Makes You Aware of Being Alive,” this second installment in the series features Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor—one of the composer’s greatest masterpieces—as its centerpiece.
