A brilliant Arnold album from one of the finest ensembles in the land of brass. A complete survey of Arnold, whose centenary fell in 2021, played with characteristically English poise. Restored in a new remastering by an engineer at the UK's Nimbus label. Limited pressing of 500 copies. Arnold, whose centenary fell in 2021, was himself a trumpeter (he served as principal of the London Philharmonic), and he left works that are rewarding to play - not only for brass ensemble and solo trumpet but also unaccompanied pieces for trombone, horn and tuba. He wrote nine symphonies as well as orchestral works and numerous concertos, and in film he won the Academy Award for Best Original Score at the 30th Academy Awards for The Bridge on the River Kwai (a 1957 British-American co-production that took seven awards in all). He is recognised as one of the leading British composers of the modern era. The album was originally made to mark Arnold's 85th birthday, but as the composer died some three months after the sessions were completed, it took on much of the character of a memorial release. Fine Arts Brass, the ensemble heard here, were the dedicatees of the Brass Quintet No. 2 (tracks 18-20) in 1987, which makes the disc significant on that count too. With the focus on brass, the music unfolds through Arnold's approachable melodies and inventive rhythms in the most engaging way. A complete survey of Arnold's brass writing is a rarity, and since much of this music is known to be difficult, the recording has considerable documentary value as well. For this reissue a new remastering was carried out by Nimbus engineer Mike Clements. Nimbus Records has always taken a serious view of sound quality, and had never re-mastered anything, judging that its existing CD releases already preserved the optimum quality for the format. On this occasion, taking into account the time elapsed since the original release and recent advances in equipment, the label readily agreed to our request to deliver the best possible sound. Although this is an import edition, a newly written Japanese commentary of some 400-600 characters is printed on the reverse of the obi (there is no Japanese translation of the booklet).
