Ensemble playing of unmatched distinction from the leading players of the Berlin Philharmonic in the Abbado years. Newly remastered by an engineer of the British label Nimbus. Limited pressing of 500 copies The Berlin Philharmonic Octet traces its beginnings to 1928, when eight members of the orchestra came together to play the Schubert Octet, the very work included in this set. Gathered here are the two albums the group recorded for Nimbus Records in Britain. Discs 1 and 2 were recorded some two years and four months apart and were originally issued separately, each to considerable acclaim. The membership changed over the years, and at the time of these 1995 and 1998 sessions younger players were gradually joining the orchestra following Abbado's succession to Karajan as music director of the Berlin Philharmonic. Among them, two principals from the Karajan years, the horn player Gerd Seifert (principal 1964-96) and the clarinettist Alois Brandhofer (principal 1982-92), were in the closing phase of their careers and make an outstanding impression. Rainer Zepperitz (principal 1957-95), long the anchor of the bass line, is also a considerable presence, underpinning the stability of the ensemble. The playing in the much-loved Beethoven and in the Hindemith, written for this very group, is overwhelming, and the joyous Schubert recorded in 1998 must count among the finest performances of the work on disc. For this reissue the recordings have been newly remastered by Mike Clements, an engineer at Nimbus. Nimbus Records has always taken sound quality very seriously and had never remastered these titles, judging that the CDs already released preserved optimal quality. Given the time that has passed since the original releases and the advances in equipment in recent years, the label kindly agreed to our request to deliver the best possible sound. Although this is an import edition, the reverse of the Japanese obi carries a newly written commentary in Japanese of some 400-600 characters (the booklet is not translated into Japanese).
