Musicianship of fathomless breadth, distilled into pianism that conveys it with brilliant clarity The second album from Madoka Fukami, a young pianist from Kyoto who has won high praise across Europe, and particularly in France. The programme brings together works by two great virtuoso pianist-composers, Liszt and Busoni, alongside the Ginastera piano sonata with its transcendental technical demands and intricate rhythms - a programme in which wide-ranging musicianship and formidable technique are magnificently fused. Madoka Fukami, piano Fukami studied at the Music High School attached to the Faculty of Music of the Tokyo University of the Arts and then at the university itself, before graduating from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris with a master's degree in piano, early music and chamber music, taking first prize by unanimous decision of the jury in each. She also holds the Diplôme de concertiste from the École Normale de Musique de Paris. At the suggestion of Abdel Rahman El Bacha she spent three years as artist in residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium. She was awarded fifth prize and the prize for the best performance of a work by Ravel at the 2015 Long-Thibaud-Crespin International Competition, was a finalist and winner of the prize for the best performance of a contemporary work at the 2017 Busoni International Competition, and received the Newcomer Prize at the 22nd Aoyama Music Awards in 2012. Praised by Maria João Pires, she gave a highly successful joint performance with her in the presence of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal. She has appeared with the Orchestre de chambre de Paris, the Orquestra Nacional do Porto, the Orchestre Pasdeloup, the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Wallonie, the Orchestra Sinfonica Metropolitana di Bari, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Geidai Philharmonia, under conductors including Adrian Leaper, Frank Braley, Kanako Abe, Takuo Yuasa, Tomomi Nishimoto and Kosuke Tsunoda. Her complete Debussy piano cycle at the Yamaha Concert Salon in Ginza, presented by Yamaha Music Japan, was a considerable success, and since 2015 she has continued her series "Composers Who Loved the Érard Piano" at the historic Kyoto residence Hirano no Ie Waza Eieito. In 2020 she planned, produced and streamed "Depth of Light: Art × Piano × Contemporary Music" with the visual artist Makoto Ofune, and her world premiere of a new work by Naoki Sakata at the ROHM Theatre Kyoto was also warmly received. In March 2021 she appeared with the Tokyo Philharmonic on NHK E-Tele's "Classic Ongakukan" as soloist in Yoritsune Matsudaira's Theme and Variations. She has studied piano with Kumiko Tsubaki, Yoko Ebisu, Jiaxun Lin, Asako Tamura, Hiroshi Sumino, Seizo Azuma, Haruko Ueda, Georges Pludermacher, Marian Rybicki, Jun Kanno, Michel Béroff, Abdel Rahman El Bacha and Maria João Pires; fortepiano with Patrick Cohen; and chamber music with Itamar Golan and Kenneth Weiss.
