Featuring a pairing of Symphonies No. 2 and No. 4! This is the second installment in the Sibelius symphony cycle by Welsh conductor Owain Awer Hughes and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, launched by the British label Rubicon. Volume 1 (PRCD1055/RCD1055), featuring Symphonies No. 1 and No. 3, was selected as “Record of the Month” in *Record Geijutsu*’s Overseas Releases Review, named an “Editor’s Choice” in the November 2020 issue of *Gramophone* magazine, and was also named a “Critics’ Choice 2020”—an annual selection by critics—marking a strong start. The highly anticipated Volume 2 features Symphony No. 2, which marked a major step forward for Sibelius as a symphonist, and Symphony No. 4, written during a period when Sibelius—having been diagnosed with throat cancer—feared for his life, gave up alcohol and tobacco, and suffered from withdrawal symptoms. Born in Cardiff, Wales, in 1942, Owain Arwel Hughes grew up as the son of Arwel Hughes (1909–1988), a successful composer and conductor. He studied conducting under Bolt, Haitink, and Kempe, and has continued his passionate musical career for over 40 years. Although his name is still relatively unknown in Japan, he has steadily built a solid reputation in Europe and the United States, and in 2009, he was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire), a testament to his artistic merit.
