Hen Rice writes, “Upon discovering Fanny Hensel’s dramatic scene ‘Hero and Leander,’ I was astonished by its rich color and inventiveness, as well as its skillful orchestration and dramatic expression.” As the sister of Felix Mendelssohn, many of Fanny’s works were published under her brother’s name due to the constraints of the 19th century, when it was difficult for female composers to gain recognition; however, in recent years, she has been increasingly reevaluated as an important composer. This album features a selection of her lieder in new orchestral arrangements, the dramatic scene “Hero and Leander” for soprano and orchestra based on a text by her father, and the introduction and aria from the “Lobgesang Cantata.” It also features Felix’s famous overture “Fingal’s Cave,” based on the 1830 Roman edition.
