Description:

Britten performed by the next-generation maestro Edward Gardner and Norway’s prestigious Bergen Philharmonic! French orchestral songs sung by Norway’s rising star soprano, Mari Eriksson! Edward Gardner, the maestro of the next generation, was appointed principal conductor of the prestigious Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in 2015. Through his acclaimed performances at the Edinburgh International Music Festival, seven international tours, and numerous recordings, he has showcased the Bergen Philharmonic’s appeal to the world. In September 2021, he assumed the important position of Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic as the successor to Yurovsky, but he also extended his contract with the Bergen Philharmonic for two years and continues to serve as its Principal Conductor through 2023. In the recording realm as well, he has earned high praise for large-scale works featuring choirs—such as those by Berlioz and Schoenberg—and the dynamic partnership between Gardner and the Bergen Philharmonic, whose previous release, “Sibelius’s *Pelléas et Mélisande*” (RCHSA5217)—a highly acclaimed “Special Selection” by Record Geijutsu magazine—has drawn much attention to the formidable partnership between Gardner and the Bergen Philharmonic. Their new album features a collection of orchestral songs by Britten and Canteloup, performed in collaboration with the acclaimed Norwegian soprano Mari Eriksmon (Mari Eriksmon)! Mari Eriksmon is a rising star from Norway who has enjoyed success at venues such as the Opéra-Comique in Paris, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Frankfurt Opera, the Komische Oper Berlin, and La Scala in Milan. After studying at the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Copenhagen Opera Academy, she studied under Isabelle Guillot at the Paris Conservatoire, where she mastered French singing. “Although French is not my native language, I always feel at ease when singing in French, and I’m developing a love for the language,” says Eriksmond. She performs Britten’s “Four French Songs” based on poems by Victor Hugo and Paul Verlaine, “Illuminations,” based on the poetry of Arthur Rimbaud, and “Songs of Auvergne”—Kantloop’s signature work based on folk songs from the Auvergne region—all set to French texts. Of course, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, with its flowing string sounds under Gardner’s masterful baton, and the excellent CHANDOS recording (SACD hybrid disc) are also worth noting.
