A birthday cantata for Queen Mary, performed by world-class early music vocal soloists including Sampson, Davis, Daniels, and Brooke! “Vivat,” the independent label launched in 2013 by Robert King—a master of the British early music scene—and the Kings Consort. The second release in their newly launched Purcell recording series is here! When it comes to the King’s Consort’s recordings of Purcell, it all began with Volume 1 of their collection of odes, recorded in 1988, and they went on to record the complete set of Purcell’s odes—which were relatively unknown at the time—across eight volumes (CDS44031/8). Subsequently, they took the early music world by storm with a series of recordings, including the Complete Sacred Music of Purcell (CDS44141/51) and the Complete Secular Solo Songs of Purcell (CDS44161/3), cementing The King’s Consort’s reputation as specialists in Purcell’s music. A new Purcell album, recorded during the pandemic lockdown in the fall of 2020 (PVIVAT121/VIVAT121), recorded during the pandemic lockdown in the fall of 2020, was highly acclaimed—including being named an “Editor’s Choice” by the British magazine Gramophone—and the subsequent second album in the series features three odes written for Queen Mary’s birthday. With an overture, chorus, aria, and a captivating ritornello unfolding in succession, these three masterpiece odes—which, while superficially festive, are richly imbued with the melancholic sensibility characteristic of Purcell’s magnificent music—are performed by Carolyn Sampson, Jestin Davis, Charles Daniels, Matthew Brook—world-class early music singers who have been recording and performing Purcell with the King’s Consort for 20 years (Daniels even participated in the recording of the first volume of the ode collection 33 years ago!)—along with an elite ensemble led by Kati Debreczeni.
