This chamber orchestral version of *Mahler: Symphony No. 5*, performed by 18 musicians, is arranged by Klaus Simon, a German-born pianist and conductor. Simon, who specializes in 20th-century music, has created an arrangement that is truly astonishing: it preserves the sonic richness of Mahler’s work—originally intended for a large orchestra—without compromise. In fact, the balance with the string section in this chamber orchestra version is so well-achieved that one might even think it surpasses the original. Of course, the fact that the arranger himself conducts is certainly a contributing factor. Furthermore, it is clear that Simon draws on his extensive experience in performing and thoroughly researching many modern and contemporary works by composers such as Schoenberg, Pfitzner, and Rihm. The instrumentation is written for 18 musicians, including accordion and piano, just like the small-ensemble version of Symphony No. 9 (ARS38155S) that garnered attention in the Ensemble Mini recording. The Horst Sinfonietta was founded in Freiburg in 1996 by conductor Klaus Simon, and its performance style is a balanced approach that draws on the best elements of both Baroque and modern music without being confined to either. Furthermore, with a permanent drummer and sound engineer on staff, the ensemble delivers a sound that could truly be described as the ideal for a contemporary chamber orchestra.
