Revived with the latest remastering by engineers at the UK-based Nimbus label! Limited to 500 copies This exquisite recording of Brahms—which can be considered one of the pinnacles of the career of Karl Leister (1937–), a world-renowned figure in the clarinet world who long served as the backbone of Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic—is finally being reissued with a new remaster! At the time of the 1997 recording, he had already left the Berlin Philharmonic (where he served as principal clarinetist until 1993) and was teaching at the Hans Eisler School of Music in Berlin and serving as a professor at the Saito Kinen Orchestra, while also performing worldwide as a freelance soloist. He had recorded these Brahms works for labels such as DG even during his tenure with the Berlin Philharmonic, and they were already recognized as world-class recordings of the Böhm-system clarinet. However, on this Nimbus release, there is absolutely no sign of age-related decline; instead, he leaves behind a masterpiece that stands as a pinnacle of his artistry. Given that these works exemplify the state of Brahms’s art in his very final years and are recognized as quintessential chamber music for this instrument, this recording likely holds strong symbolic significance as a culmination of Leister’s long career. Since Nimbus records went out of print quickly and distribution subsequently shifted to CD-Rs, this marks the first release as a standard CD in quite some time (Leister himself often brought many of these out-of-print Nimbus recordings—including this one—to his performances around the world, and it seems he held them in high regard). He shares a close, almost brotherly bond with his accompanist, Borgner, and cellist Becher is also the principal cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic; their performance is a well-coordinated one between close friends who understand each other perfectly. For this reissue, Mike Clements, an engineer at the Nimbus label, performed a new remastering. Nimbus Records places a high priority on sound quality and, based on the judgment that the quality of its CD releases was already optimal, had never remastered any of its recordings. However, taking into account the passage of time since the initial releases and advancements in equipment, they graciously agreed to our request to deliver the best possible sound quality. Although this is an import release, the back of the obi strip features a new Japanese commentary of approximately 400–600 characters (there is no Japanese translation in the booklet).
