Martin Stegner, a virtuoso from Nuremberg, Germany, who has been a viola player with the Berlin Philharmonic since 1996, has recorded all six of J.S. Bach’s immortal masterpieces, the “Unaccompanied Cello Suites,” on the viola! Speaking about Bach’s music, and these “Unaccompanied Cello Suites” in particular, Stegnar remarks, “They are the most perfect works of music ever composed,” and adds, “They are works that allow for millions of possible interpretations, and I held such profound respect for them that I lacked the courage to perform them in public.” The words of Stegner—a seasoned veteran who has performed on countless stages as a member of the Berlin Philharmonic, playing works from various eras and styles—remind us once again of the outstanding perfection and profound presence of Bach’s “Suite for Unaccompanied Cello.” After spending many years engaging with the six “Unaccompanied Cello Suites”—works that have enriched his life and brought him happiness—Stegner came to the conclusion that he wanted to share this music with friends and listeners, and, having waited for the right moment, decided to record them on the viola. Without a recording engineer, he headed to the concert hall with just four microphones and his viola, taking on the triple role of performer, producer, and engineer for the recording. Martin Stegner began learning the violin from his father at the age of eight and switched to the viola after studying under Roman Nödel at the Mannheim University of Music. After studying with Nacht hard Lesser and Wilfried Streler at the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Academy, he joined the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin as principal violist in 1993. Three years later, he moved to the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, where he remains to this day. Stegner, who is also a co-founder of the Berlin Philharmonic Jazz Group, established Ensemble Bolero Berlin in 2008. His activities extend far beyond his work with the Berlin Philharmonic and his solo career; he is widely active in various fields, including jazz and chamber music. Tokyo M-Plus
