Recordings of Korngold (CHSA5220), French works (CHSA5252), and Respighi (CHSA5261)—all of which were selected as “Top Picks” by both Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine (the Japanese-market edition, RCHSA5261, was also named a “Top Pick” by Record Geijutsu)— and the orchestra is rapidly gaining attention as a top-tier ensemble bringing together master musicians from across the UK. The fourth orchestral recording by John Wilson and the newly formed “Symphonia of London” is a collection of British string orchestra works from the first half of the 20th century, tracing the footsteps of Elgar and Vaughan Williams. With the exception of Bridge’s “Elegy,” composed during World War I, all three pieces date from the 1930s: Britten’s variations on a theme by his mentor Bridge (from “Three Pastorals No. 2” for string quartet), L. Berkeley’s Serenade for Strings, written during the time he lived with Britten, and and Bliss’s “Music for Strings”—a work he undertook with the intention of writing “pure music” after completing the score for the film *The World to Come*—all of which fully showcase the fresh, vibrant sound of the Sinfonia of London’s strings.
