A limited pressing of precious recordings by the legendary pianist Youra Guller, born in Marseille in 1895. Restored in a new remastering by an engineer at the UK's Nimbus label. Valuable late studio recordings by the great French pianist Youra Guller (1895-1980), the 40th anniversary of whose death fell last year. A prodigy who gave her first recital at five and graduated from the Paris Conservatoire at fourteen, she was also a beauty who received offers from the film world. From early on she moved in the circle of leading contemporary composers such as Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Milhaud, and in 1923 she appeared at London's Wigmore Hall alongside such masters as Moriz Rosenthal, Emil von Sauer and Josef Hofmann. Following an affair and a divorce, however, her health suffered and she withdrew from performing for twenty years from 1934. After returning to the stage she gradually widened her activities again, making her Carnegie Hall debut in 1971 at the age of 76 and giving a successful concert in 1973 marking the 50th anniversary of her British debut. This CD was recorded in 1975 in the wake of that success. The moment the opening Bach sounds, one recalls Milhaud's tribute: "Even as a girl she stood out for a depth of tone one might call sublime, and for the brilliance of her playing." In the five Spanish and French classical pieces that follow, she offers a wholly different sound - finely articulated and poised in its progress. The rich imagination and desolation of the Chopin, and the shadowed colouring and deep meditation of the Granados, are beauty of the highest order. For this reissue a new remastering was carried out by Nimbus engineer Mike Clements. Nimbus Records has always taken a serious view of sound quality, and had never re-mastered anything, judging that its existing CD releases already preserved the optimum quality for the format. On this occasion, taking into account the time elapsed since the original release and recent advances in equipment, the label readily agreed to our request to deliver the best possible sound. Although this is an import edition, a newly written Japanese commentary of some 400-600 characters is printed on the reverse of the obi (there is no Japanese translation of the booklet).
