The debut album by Mahani Teabe, an exceptionally talented pianist from Easter Island (Rapa Nui)! As Easter Island’s only professional pianist, possessing remarkable musicality, she won first prize at the Claudio Arrau International Piano Competition in 1999 and was subsequently selected as a Steinway & Sands artist, she was destined for a brilliant career on the international concert stage. However, she turned her back on that path, returned to Rapa Nui, and founded a music school for the island’s children—a remarkable story in itself. The story behind this recording is equally compelling: David Fulton, renowned worldwide as a collector of famous Cremona-made instruments such as Stradivarius, happened to hear Teave perform while his cruise ship made a stop at Easter Island. He was so deeply moved by her performance that it led to the release of her debut album. (It is said that the manager of the Seattle Symphony and the recording producer, who later heard her play, were also amazed by her brilliance.) This rich recital program, spread across two CDs, features pianistic works by Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff; Scriabin’s pieces for the left hand; and works by Bach and Handel.
