This Mahler symphony cycle has steadily garnered acclaim, having been repeatedly selected as “Editor’s Choice” by the British magazine *Gramophone* and winning the “Orchestra Award” at the 2019 BBC Music Magazine Awards for their recording of Symphony No. 1. With releases coming at a rapid pace, Volume 9 of the series—Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection”—is finally here, marking the series’ climax! German label ARSProduktion has also just released a 1991 live recording of “Resurrection” from the “Gustav Mahler Fest Kassel,” a city closely associated with Mahler (ARS38304S). This new release, however, features a gripping live performance recorded in Düsseldorf in April 2019. The fact that Mahler began composing this work during his time in Budapest (both Mahler and Adam Fischer served as music directors at the Hungarian State Opera), the Viennese Classical connection between Haydn and Mahler, and Mahler’s song “St. Anthony of Padua Preaching to the Fish,” performed in the third movement—which accurately reflects the anti-racism and human rights activism Adam Fischer has been involved in for many years—these are just some of the many reasons why Adam Fischer says, “Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 holds special meaning for me.” This is his all-out, soul-stirring live performance of *Resurrection*!
