Eric Whitacre’s New Work Complete Recording of “The Sacred Veil” Grammy Award-winning composer Eric Whitacre (b. 1970) is an American contemporary composer who enjoys widespread popularity in Japan—from professionals to amateurs—particularly in the fields of choral and wind ensemble music. His latest project, “The Sacred Veil,” is a collaboration with poet and lyricist Charles Anthony Silvestri, with whom he has worked numerous times in the past. The work features Silvestri’s poetry as its main text, along with words left in the diary of Silvestri’s wife, Julie (Julia Lawrence Silvestri), who passed away prematurely in 2005, as well as Whittaker’s own texts. It premiered in February 2019 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, conducted by the composer himself. Comprising 12 pieces written for a four-part mixed choir (SATB), solo cello, and piano, the work draws on texts by Silvestri that speak of love, loss, healing, new beginnings, and life. Centered around beautiful and mystical melodies, this choral work—ranging from warm, enveloping harmonies to sharp, heart-wrenching sounds—embodies Whitaker’s charm and talent. The final track also includes a lengthy interview (approximately 23 minutes) with Whitaker and Silvestri. The Los Angeles Master Chorale, which delivered magnificent performances at both the premiere and this recording, serves as the resident company of the Los Angeles Music Center and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and is a leading professional choir on the West Coast that regularly performs with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Hollywood Bowl, Orchestra. Additionally, the solo cello—which plays a crucial role throughout *The Sacred Veil*—is performed by renowned American cellist Jeffrey Ziegler, a former member of the Kronos Quartet. Tokyo M-Plus
