Founded in 2001 by Nigel Short, a former member of The King’s Singers, "Tenebre" is widely recognized as one of the world’s premier vocal ensembles. Tenebre’s new recording has garnered significant attention: their 2016 album *Brahms & Bruckner* (SIGCD430) won their second BBC Music Magazine Award, and their 2018 album *Music of the Spheres* (SIGCD904) was nominated for a Grammy Award. This new recording features music associated with “Tenebrae” (the morning service of Holy Week held prior to the celebration of Easter)—which also gave the group its name— combines François Couperin’s “Récit des Ténèbres” (“Recitation of the Darkness”) with Carlo Gesualdo’s “Tenebrae Responsoria for Holy Thursday”—a program that could be described as uniquely Tenebre. Although separated by a span of about 100 years and differing in style, the works of Couperin and Gesualdo possess a mysterious and hypnotic charm.
