Following *In the Footsteps of Sorrow* (PDCD34215) and *Father, I Lift My Eyes to Heaven* (PDCD34205), the Marian Consort’s latest recording features a collection of masterpieces—including the “Four-Part Mass” composed by the devout Catholic William Byrd (1539/40–1623), born of his passion for the faith, including the “Mass in Four Parts”! In 16th-century England, where the Church of England had rejected Catholicism yet both denominations coexisted, Byrd secretly maintained his Catholic faith while composing music for the Church of England; in 1585, his name was even included on the Church of England’s list of recusants. Though buffeted by the times, Bird remained steadfast in his Catholic faith and survived those turbulent years. He is particularly famous for having continued to write Latin Masses and motets for “secret services” held in the private residences of Catholic nobles, and it is precisely this body of work composed for the Catholic faith that continues to be regarded as Bird’s greatest masterpieces. Since its inception, the Marian Consort has consistently featured music from the English Renaissance—particularly the works of Byrd—as one of its core repertoire, and this “Secret Service” concert is a long-awaited project they are proud to present.
