Toyohiko Sato, a leading figure in the lute world and a world-renowned master whom Japan is proud to call its own, releases a new recording on his independent label, “Nostalgia.” Amid the music of that era—when a new genre known as Baroque music was emerging and evolving rapidly on a grand scale—lute music moved in the opposite direction, quietly and slowly. Toyohiko Sato, who has long identified unique parallels between French Baroque lute music and Japan’s tea ceremony culture—noting its connections to “wabi-sabi” and “Zen”—and has held concerts and produced CDs based on these insights, has now discovered common ground between the 17th-century French lute music known as “Style Brise” (the “broken style”) and the Japanese aesthetic concept of “iki.” This program—featuring a collection of “iki” French-style lute (Baroque lute) music—is a testament to Toyohiko Sato’s profound insight and unique perspective. For this recording as well, he performs on the “Lorenz [Laurentius] Griff,” a precious original instrument made in 1611 and converted into a French lute in 1673. Tokyo M Plus
