A rising star in the early music world—and one of the leading figures among the new generation of Baroque violinists—Bojan Čičić is a key member of ensembles such as Florilegium, the Ancient Chamber Orchestra, and the EU Baroque Orchestra, with Rachel Podger’s Brecon Baroque at the forefront of his activities. He founded the period ensemble Ilyria Consort—which he founded to explore unknown music from the 17th and 18th centuries—features the “Collection of Chamber Sonatas” by the 18th-century composer and violinist Giovanni Stefano Carbonelli (1694–1773)! Carbonnell, who is said to have studied under Corelli in Rome, was a musician from Livorno, Italy, who was active in London during the same era as Handel. After moving to England, he served as concertmaster of the Royal Theatre Orchestra at Drury Lane and, under the patronage of John Manners, 3rd Marquess of Rutland, produced a series of captivating works, most notably these “Chamber Sonatas.” Later, Carboni made a spectacular career shift from musician to wine merchant (!) and reportedly achieved great success as a purveyor to the British royal court. Hidden in the shadows of music history for some 200 years, Carbonelli’s “Chamber Sonatas” are masterpieces that bear the unmistakable mark of the post-Corelli generation; in particular, the melodic beauty of the “Third Movement—Aria” from “Sonata No. 6” is simply exquisite.
