The story of salvation through pure love has been a major theme in Wagner's later operas, and in many ways it is a perfect introduction to Wagner. Samuel Yon, as the Dutchman, has a clear voice and plays the role well, responding to Zenta's anxieties as accurately expressed by Melvate. Dahlan, sung by Zoellich, gives the work strength, and Bruns sings with fervor, expressing the helmsman's fiery personality.
