Bach: Trio Sonatas (2 CDs) These six trio sonatas are a collection of pieces for organ composed by Bach around 1730. Since the right-hand part, left-hand part, and pedal part each play completely independent melodies, they are classified as a trio sonata with three voices. While this is typically a chamber music form performed by two solo instruments and a continuo, this recording presents a challenging interpretation by performing the entire work on a single organ. While the structure generally consists of three movements—fast–slow–fast—the Fourth Trio Sonata includes an Adagio introduction. Furthermore, the melody for this movement is adapted from Church Cantata No. 76, while the second movement of No. 3 is adapted from the Triple Concerto, BWV 1044. Although it is said to have been written as a keyboard exercise for his son, there is no doubt that mastering these pieces requires considerable technical skill and musicality. Newsholm, who plays the organ here, sang in the choir at Worcester Cathedral, received an organ scholarship at Salisbury Cathedral, and subsequently served as Assistant Organist and Music Director of the Girls’ Choir at Canterbury Cathedral.
