Description:
Marie-Thérèse, the marshal’s wife, is beginning to feel the effects of aging. Although her beloved Octavian swears “eternal love,” she cannot shake her gloom. Just then, her cousin, Baron Ox (a somewhat vulgar and coarse man), arrived. To evade his pursuit, Marie-Thérèse tried to cover up the situation by having Octavian dress in women’s clothing, but this was only the beginning of a series of troubles. Baron Ox’s purpose for the visit was to ask, “I have recently become engaged to Sophie, the only daughter of a wealthy merchant, and I’d like you to find a nobleman to serve as my messenger—the ‘Knight of the Rose’—to propose to her.” The Marshal’s wife agreed and decided to entrust the role to Octavian. Entrusted with this important mission, Octavian visits Sophie in high spirits—but there, he falls in love with her at first sight. Of course, the “eternal love” he had sworn to the Marshal’s wife vanishes into thin air, and with Baron Ox’s devious schemes thrown into the mix, the story becomes increasingly entangled. The opera *Der Rosenkavalier*. The wavering heart of the heroine, Marie-Thérèse, and the innocent hearts of the young lovers are enveloped in meltingly sweet Viennese waltzes, with a pinch of spice added to weave a story of the highest caliber. The beauty of the “Trio” sung in the final act is beyond words. This production realistically portrays the distortion of the dream Strauss depicted, using modern sets and costumes. Be sure to listen for the fresh and vibrant Octavian sung by Tara Eroot, a mezzo-soprano whose popularity has been skyrocketing recently, as well as the steady Marschallin portrayed by veteran soprano Kate Royal. Be sure to savor Theodora Georgiu’s beautiful Sophie. Above all, the enchanting music created by Titiarti will transport listeners for a moment to Vienna in “the good old days.” Naxos Japan
