W. Christie brings to life the operas of Cavalli, a pupil of Monteverdi and one of the most popular composers of the 17th century In the mid-17th century, as commercial theaters opened one after another in Venice and opera performances flourished, Cavalli gained immense fame as a popular opera composer. One of his masterpieces, *La Didone*, is considered the oldest surviving musical work based on episodes from Virgil’s famous *Aeneid*. This opera depicts the wanderings of the hero Aeneas following the fall of Troy and his tragic love affair with Dido, Queen of Carthage, while transforming the original work’s tragic ending into a happy ending that brings salvation to the heartbroken Dido. This performance is a live recording from the Théâtre de Caen in northwestern France and is a co-production of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Théâtre de Caen, and the Théâtre Municipal de Luxembourg. William Christie & Les Arts Florissants, who have forged a strong partnership with the Théâtre de Caen, bring this little-known operatic masterpiece back to life for the modern audience with a vibrant performance.
