Description:
The setting is 16th century Sicily. Governor Friedrich forbids love and decides that violators will be put to death, and immediately captures a nobleman named Claudio. His sister, Isabella, a nun, goes to Friedrich to plead for her brother's life, but he tells her that he will forgive her if she teaches him the wonders of love. So she and Mariana, a nun who was abandoned by Friedrich in the past, set out to punish him and lift his reckless ban.... Based on Shakespeare's "Shaku ni shaku ni shaku," Wagner himself wrote the libretto and composed the music for the 1834 opera "The Love Embargo," a comedy in the style of Italian operas of the time. The subtitle, "The Nuns of Palermo," is also Italianate, the content is truly enjoyable, and the music, while still Wagnerian in places, is generally lighthearted. Shakespeare's original is based on a rather complex character description and a difficult synopsis, but Wagner's work has been transformed into an easy-to-understand, enjoyable production. In addition, Holten's production replaces the stage with a kitschy style, making the story even more interesting.With Bolton conducting, Uhl singing the lead role of Isabella, and the heavyweight Maltman at the helm, this colorful stage is a must-see, featuring young singers in all their glory.
