Puccini’s (1856–1924) final work, *Turandot*, explores timeless forms of love. It is a masterpiece that takes the universal themes of “love, death, fear, and power” as its central motifs and enriches them with beautiful melodies. Heavily incorporating the Orientalist trends popular at the time, the opera features the contrast between the two heroines—Turandot, who wields overwhelming power, and the delicate Liu—along with Prince Calaf, who is torn by the mystery he must solve. These three characters, along with the many people surrounding them, blend seamlessly to build a magnificent climax. Although Puccini passed away just before the opera was completed, his vision was carried forward by composer Franco Alfano, who is also known for crafting a magnificent final scene. The cast of singers is also worth noting. American star soprano, Lise Lindström (making her Royal Opera House debut in this production) delivers a resolute performance in the title role, alongside the superb Calaf portrayed by the outstanding tenor Marco Berti and the delicate Liu sung by Eri Nakamura, a Japanese singer active primarily in Germany—this is a magnificent cast featuring some of today’s finest performers. Andrei Serban’s lavish and spectacular staging for this production dates back to 1984; it is already a familiar sight at the Royal Opera House, and the BBC television recording from the 1980s has long been beloved by audiences. Given that this recording marks the 15th revival, it is safe to say that the production enjoys truly remarkable popularity. Naxos Japan
